Safety Tips for You and Your Quad

Recreational ATV riding can be a fun and exciting activity. There are many ATVs marketed towards a younger demographic so children can also enjoy the thrill of the trails. But before you head out on your next adventure, it's important to know a few standard safety tips. Remember, these tips are to keep you safe and enhance your fun, not impede it.

The most vital thing to remember before hopping on your quad is proper gear and protection. Always wear a helmet and pads before going anywhere on your ATV. Long sleeves, pants, and gloves will keep you from getting any nasty scrapes in case you have an accident. Also, remember to protect your eyes with goggles or a face shield. This will keep you safe in a worst case scenario, and prevent any trips to the hospital.

Know your limits. If a certain ATV is too powerful for you or your child, then you'll most likely want to downgrade to something safer. Never exceed speeds that you feel are too dangerous. Also, be aware of the laws in your area concerning speed limits and authorized riding trails. It's never a good idea to ride your ATV on a public street or pavement where traffic or pedestrians are around.

Don't ride at night. It may be tempting for the thrills, but riding at night - especially on trails - is extremely dangerous. ATV riding is a daytime activity for a reason: your safety.

Make sure your ATV is properly tuned up and cared for. Check the brakes, transmission, and all working parts. If necessary, take your ATV to a quad mechanic to ensure it's in top condition.

Finally, use common sense. Don't drink or use drugs while operating your ATV. It may be a recreational vehicle, but that doesn't mean it mixes well with your other recreations. Be smart, and most importantly, have fun!
