ATV Safety

All Terrain Vehicle, or ATV, safety is important, and necessary for all ATV riders. The ATVs are mostly ridden in sand, dirt trails, and rocky areas. Following the rules can be sure riders avoid serious injury or death. ATV rules should not be taken for granted.

The subject of awareness and safety met a milestone in 1988, when the ASI, All Terrain Vehicle Safety Institute, was formed. The major manufactures of ATVs also actively supported and sponsored the institute's training programs in an effort to increase education and awareness for ATV riders. Some of the manufactures include Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Arctic Cat, BRP, KTM, KYMCO USA, and Polaris. The safety program is the first step in riding an ATV correctly, and the following items should be practiced at all times.

ATV riders should always wear a helmet approved by either the Department of Transportation (DOT), or the Snell Foundation. A long sleeve padded jersey is also recommended, as well as gloves, long pants, goggles, and over the ankle boots. Do not ride with a passenger, or as a passenger, as the weight distribution changes the dynamics of riding safety. Keep the ATVs off of paved roads, as collisions with cars are deadly. Make sure to keep younger children off the bikes until they reach an age where they can ride their own ATV that fits their size, under proper supervision. Finally, make sure you do not operate an ATV under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The last rule should apply to any recreational activity because the danger of injury or death are present.

ATVs are a lot of fun to ride for families, groups, or individuals. They can be used for playing in the desert, or riding in the hills. Just follow the basic rules, and ride responsibly.
