ATV Safety

Many families love to share outdoor sports and do these things together. Snowmobiling, cycling and ATV riding are just naming a few. Even though riding these vehicles is fun, safety should be first on everyone's mind.

First, each rider should always take a training course. Just like learning to drive a car, having complete control over your ATV is a must. These courses are usually given free in communities with county extension services. A number one rule to follow is to never allow anyone under 16 to command an adult size ATV. These machines are very heavy, and in the case of a roll over accident, a child may be pinned underneath the vehicle. The child may also not be strong enough to control or steer the ATV out of harm's way if quick reflexes are needed to avoid a potential accident.

Traveling responsibly will avoid harm to both your ATV and the rider. Drive only on trails designated for ATV use. On your trip, you may run into obstacles. Always drive over debris in the trail as to not widen the trail and only cross streams where the trail goes through it or a sign designates where to cross. Helmets are a must and can help you avoid serious head injury. Never drive on public roads and do not ride with two people on a one person vehicle. Do not ride under the influence of alcohol or other drugs and watch your speed and other drivers.

As this sport becomes more popular, expect more people to be out on the trails. Always practice safety measures and parents should always teach by good example.
