Round 2 of the Onsted Extreme dirt track race took place July 11th 2009 at the Slee Rd. Sports complex. The day started out with a very strong thunderstorm. This thing produce a monsoon of rain; about 3 inches in one hour! The thunder sounded like bombs were exploding! This all took place around 8 a.m. Saturday morning and worried the promoter Dave Dixon. After the storm passed the track was very wet so practice was held off until noon. Luckily the track was built very well and it turned out to be extremely tacky and fast by practice. The riders loved it and the races got started around 1 p.m. As the day wore on the track became very blue groove and faster yet. Riders were achieving around 30 sec lap times consistently and were looking good.
There were only 2 major accidents. One of them was in the first turn and a rider high sided, not to worry he escaped unscaved. The second was in the sweeper before the straightaway. The rider got tangled up and had a good get off. This wreck caused alarm amongst the safety crew as they quickly rushed to the scene. As the rider came too he got up under his own power and was not seriously injured. The safety crew is top notch at the Onsted track. Crew leader Stan Shoemaker is always on top of things making sure the riders, spectators and track officials are safe at all times.
Overall the weather was awesome, the track was fast and the racing action was intense!! I had a great time attending the race and got some great footage that I edited together to create a 3min highlight video of the weekend. The next race will be held August 22nd I hope to see you there for more great racing action.
